A special meeting of the Yorktown city council took place on Monday, May 16, at 6 p.m. The first item on the agenda was the consideration of Mary Kay Mattox to replace Miranda Arguellez on the council. The council voted unanimously to make Mattox a council member. Mayor Baker then administered the oath of office to Mattox, as well as councilmembers Migura and Peyton.

Miranda Arguellez was then sworn in as the new city secretary/city administrator and council approved the hiring of Larry Zermeno as a part-time employee to train Arguellez.

Next, council heard a request from Crystal Irvin, president of Spay Neuter Your Pet DeWitt County (SNYPD), for funding.

“We came and spoke at the city council meeting, I think it was 2019 when we first started, and so much has happened and changed since then,” Irvin stated. “We’ve made a tremendous impact for DeWitt County. We started out in the little schoolhouse, had garage sales, and it worked its way up to being a resale shop with donated items. The first year, I think we issued 196 vouchers total and paid out about $10,000 in vet bills. Second year, issued 486 vouchers and paid out about $25,000 in vet bills.”

SNYPD receives donated items and cleans them up, prices them, and then resells them. With the funds from the resale items, SNYPD is able to distribute vouchers for spaying and neutering.
