Ashes stolen, family heartbroken

On Wednesday, Aug. 4, the house of Marie Antranette Gips, recently deceased, was burglarized. In addition to several other items, the cremated remains of Gips were stolen. The family had been cleaning out the house and had just received the remains in a package from the crematorium, and they assume that the thief saw the package and thought that it was something that could be useful or sold. The family does not care about any of the other items, but they ask that the thief or anyone who might have seen it just return the ashes.

“In our hearts, we believe that whoever has stolen them didn’t realize what they were taking and will do the right thing and return them,” the family stated. If anyone has any information that could help, they are encouraged to reach out. If the ashes are found, they can be left at the Cuero Police Department, Freund Funeral Home, or at the house in the carport. The family simply wishes to have their mother back so that they can put her ashes next to their father’s.

Any information can be given to the police department by calling 361-277-3552 or you can call DeWitt County Crime Stoppers at 361-275-0880.
