Cuero city council met last Monday, May 9, for the regularly scheduled meeting.

During public comment, Mike Cavanaugh spoke saying “Mayor and councilmembers, good afternoon. Most of you know but you may not know that I have sold my place and we are moving to North Carolina.”

He explained he is moving to be closer to his grandchildren and other family.

“What I do want you to know is that I may be physically in Asheville but as far as Cuero and the Cuero airport project, I’m working from home, and I am not letting this go.”

Cavanaugh went on to say, “I’m leaving a truck here and I can fly from Asheville Mondays to Fridays to Austin on Allegiant Air for $59. So, I’m still all in.

“I want to give you all a quick, brief update on where we are at on the airport project right now. Currently, we are waiting for the county to purchase the 100 acres of prison land that the Legislature decreed that we could do. Nine hundred dollars an acre is the price. We were hoping to have that done in May, but there were some questions about mineral rights,” Cavanaugh said.

“We are hopeful that it will go before the TDCJ board this June.

Cavanaugh ended by saying, “We don’t know what the future is going to bring. I feel that our community––we have an opportunity to have infrastructure, transportation infrastructure, to get us into the future. And we don’t know what it is but I know it’s coming. I read they are testing them [drones], they are flying them. That stuff is coming and we have an opportunity. What better place to put a facility.”
