The regular meeting of DeWitt County commissioners court took place on Thursday, June 9. First, Mellissa Whitfield with the DeWitt County Child Welfare Board spoke to the commissioners, sharing some of what they do and presenting the 2022-2023 budget.

“We are here again for another year, asking that you renew our request for the funding that we get from you guys every year. As you know, that funding goes towards the children of DeWitt County, children who are in foster care, and it helps them get the things that they need whenever they are being displaced from their homes. We have what we call a rainbow room that we stock, using the funds, with things that they need. Things like hygiene products, some clothing, diapers, baby wipes, body wash, emergency stuff, deodorant, feminine products for the older children, things like that. The caseworker is able to go in, grab what they need, for that specific child, whether it’s midnight, one o’clock in the morning, four o’clock in the morning, so that that child gets to be placed in another location with some items and they’re not left with nothing. We have partnered with the quilter’s guild, and they donate quilts to us, so that child gets their very own handmade quilt. We also have care bags, which is the bag that everything goes into.”

She also introduced Kati Klores, the new president of the board, and the commissioners moved to receive the budget.
