DeWitt County Sheriff Carl Bowen proposed amending an agreement with the City of Yorktown to raise the cost of 24-hour law enforcement services by 5% for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, at the Sept. 12 Commissioners Court meeting.

Bowen explained that the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) oversaw law enforcement in Yorktown for several years at a financial loss in place of the former police department. The commissioners opted to table action on the interlocal agreement until their Sept. 26 meeting to provide the sheriff with time to discuss the rate changes with City staff and officials.

“Every October, we review (this interlocal agreement); if any changes need to be made, then we address them at that time. Over the past two years, there has not been an increase in cost to the City of Yorktown for the law enforcement services that we provide…,” said Bowen. “Even at a 5% (increase), it’s not recouping the amount of funds that we are putting into the Westside of the County for law enforcement.”

The proposed increased cost of services totaled $21,875 per month for the fiscal year.
