A large crowd – close to 100 people – braved the sweltering heat to witness the dedication of the Iwo Jima Memorial which stands on ground donated by the DeWitt County VVA Chapter 1029.

The memorial was dedicated to the memory of Corporal Harlan Henry Block who was born in Yorktown on November 6, 1924. On February 23, 1945, he and several other men in his unit participated in the famous and celebrated flag raising on the island.

Through the efforts of the DeWitt County VVA Chapter 1029, Donna Roeder and Sarah Bargmann, and with the help of Thomas Stepanski, Tara, and all the folks at Hilltop Services for their design, creative artwork, and manufacturing skills, the memorial became a reality and was officially dedicated on June 6, D-Day, at 6 p.m.
