The Cuero Record

For the City of Cuero, progression towards the public thoroughfare’s completion is taking beginning form. This past week, asbestos removal began at the 123 East Main Street location. Once all the asbestos has been removed, demolition on the interior and exterior of the project will begin.

The City of Cuero purchased the building, formerly known as Carmona’s Hair Company, for approximately $80,000 back in April of 2020. Most distinctively, the building is known for the “Evers Bros” that reads on the front of the awning. The plan consists of creating a walkway through the building, from Main Street to the back city parking lot near where the electric car charging stations are located. The idea is for visitors who are stopping off for a charge to find themselves in downtown Cuero, but also add a distinctive flair to downtown. The thoroughfare will line up almost directly in front of the public restrooms from across the street. The notion of this idea is opening up downtown for visitors. The location is set to offer a variety of things such as a picnic area, benches, trails and landscaping throughout the location. It has been a mission, from the beginning, for the City of Cuero to try and save as much historic preservation of the building as possible.

In the city council meeting on Dec. 13 of last year, the board approved and accepted the only bid that was submitted to them for the project. The bid, on behalf of local company Weaver and Jacobs, totaled approximately $682,000, plus a separate $30,000 project, that includes an extension of the awning, in front of the building, to reach the street. $131,000 will be dedicated to the electrical division of the project.
