DeWitt County’s year-long celebration of its 175th anniversary started in Cuero last week.

The “unofficial” start of the party was on Thursday evening, at the Chisolm Trail Heritage Museum, with the opening of “Deep In The Art of DeWitt County,” a display of art from five DeWitt County artists.

Friday evening, Sept. 24, the DeWitt County Historical Musem and Historical Commission hosted a reception at the Bates-Sheppard home with Constance Sheppard Kirk speaking about the history of her family home and its importance in Cuero and DeWitt County History.

“Weekend in Olde DeWitt” took over Main Street, and the surrounding area in downtown Cuero on Saturday, Sept. 25, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and entertainment for all ages. Performances included Tejas Pioneers, Cuero High School Jazz Band, Little Mermaid Preview presented by Boys and Girls Club of DeWitt County, Rusty Steins, Little Dancers, local students performing a sketch based on Carol Hoff’s ‘Johnny Texas,’ German Dancers, Mariachis Los Serpentes de Oro, Shiner Hobo Band, and Dr. Bushrod’s Medicine Show. Saturday’s events wound down with a dance at the City Pavillion, with music from The Moods.
