DeWitt County’s 175th Anniversary provided the backdrop for the launch of a new art exhibit at the Chisolm Trail Heritage Museum in Cuero.

“Deep In The Art of DeWitt County--The Masters, Past and Present” features selected works of Martha Sawyers, E.M. “Buck” Schiwetz, Charles Schorre, Mark Kohler, and Kyle Polzin.

The assembled artworks span more than a century of award-winning artwork by five artists who have each called the DeWitt County area home.

One of these artists, Kyle Polzin, who now lives in Austin, grew up in Victoria; however, his family is all here in Cuero. Polzin speaks about his works on display, “Some of it, I haven’t seen in ten years. In fact, most of these pieces have been part of shows in the past. Most of them are from private collections, so it’s fun to go back and revisit them.”

Western art has a tradition going back hundreds of years and counts famous names in the genre. “Frederick Remington, Charlie Russel...it’s all a category of its own, and it’s really cool to be a part of it, especially with the roots I have coming from the Cuero area...I can’t help it; it’s in my blood. It’s neat to have found a niche in the western art world. And when it comes down to it, there’s not a lot of south Texas cowboy artists, and so there’s a different look to it (from the artists from Montana, Wyoming, etc.).
