A lengthy agenda was tackled on Monday, July 11 during commissioners’ court held at the DeWitt County courthouse.

First, county commissioners revisited a request that was heard at the June 27 meeting from Westhoff Volunteer Fire Chief Andrew Weikel to increase the service call stipend from $200 per call.

“We are paying $200 per call and that is whether two trucks show up or four trucks show up. As we know the high cost of fuel, maintaining equipment, and all of those various things––they are having to deal with,” DeWitt County Judge Daryl Fowler said.

With the county’s fiscal year running through September, just under $20,000 remains in the budget designated for VFD Fire Calls and Mutual Aid under Health and Welfare Services.

Fowler requested that the call stipend be raised from the current $200 to $300 per call for area volunteer fire departments from June through September. After discussion commissioners approved the $100 increase.

The court then moved on to consider the lease/purchase for a 2022 Bomag 84-inch padfoot roller for Precinct 2. The total cost for the piece of equipment would be $150,257.00. It was mentioned that this expense was not a budgeted item. In addition, a request for a lease/purchase for a 2019 Case backhoe for Precinct 1 was ratified. Both requests passed.

After discussion during closed session, DeWitt County Judge Daryl Fowler and commissioners are moving forward with the proposed purchase of 100 acres of property owned by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice located in DeWitt County.
