On Thursday, May 12, Grace Episcopal Church will be holding its first Blessing of the Brands. The event will take place at the English-German School from 4:30-7 p.m. and will include talks and demonstrations about the history of branding and faith by several historians, a blessing by Rev. Peter Thaddeus, and music by Matt Thigpen. Children’s roping activities and branding demonstrations will be available, along with complimentary cowboy stew and cornbread.

“We started talking about this last summer, about two things,” Rev. Thaddeus explained. “One, there’s a lot ranching in this county, so every ten years they have to reregister their brands, so that has been going on from August until the end of February. So that started some people thinking, cause they’ve been looking for a way to raise money for various groups in the county that feed people, like CAMAL House, and then Meals on Wheels Victoria has come to DeWitt County. We’re the point here at Grace Church where they bring the food here, we have teams that go out and deliver the food every Wednesday to about 35-40 families in Cuero and DeWitt County. So we’re looking for ways to raise money for those kinds of things and, at the same time, to honor the history of ranching in the community in South Texas. One of the things that we know from a lot of the history of South Texas is that many of the big ranches had their own churches and there’s a lot of faith history.
