The City of Cuero Animal Control facility is more than just a place to shelter stray animals picked up by animal control. The 3,350-square-foot building opened in 2013 and currently has 12 dogs at the facility but one of those is no longer up for adoption.

“Lucky”, a six-month-old male shepherd mix puppy, had a close call after falling into an 18-foot drainage hole two weeks ago. The Cuero Fire Department along with City of Cuero Animal Control officers went out to rescue the puppy. Nicole Cox with animal control climbed down the ladder and was able to tie a rope around him and get him hoisted out of the hole.

A local family adopted Lucky, taking him from the shelter to his new home on Friday, Sept. 2.

Duruisseau Troy and Cox are the two full-time Animal Control officers for the City of Cuero that take care of the facility as well as take calls around the community.

Eleven other dogs are available for adoption including “Ash” a male husky mix that has been at the facility for 120 days. Cox described Ash as full of energy, very intelligent and has a lot of love to give. She also said that Ash is great with other dogs but not as good with cats.

There is a $40 adoption fee which includes a current rabies vaccine. When a dog is adopted from the city shelter, the adopter has 30 days from the date of adoption to spay or neuter their new pet at the owners expense. Spay and neuter vouchers can be requested from the City of Cuero to help cover the expense of the procedure.
