In Nordheim ISD’s gym, a plywood painting of their mascot, the pirate, hangs. This painting was made in 1976 by Nordheim senior Jesse Flores, whose love of art began when he was in elementary school.

“Funny story, kinda!” Jennifer Flores, his daughter, explained. “When he was in fifth grade, the teacher didn’t want to deal with him and a few other students, so she put him and the other students in the back of the room and told them to do whatever they wanted to do and she would pass them with a 70. So he started drawing.”

Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jesse moved to Nordheim with his five siblings and mother, Guadalupe Ochoa, when he was in 5th grade.

“The school asked him because every basketball tournament he drew the paper mascots of the pirate from his freshman year to his senior year. So they then asked him to do the wooden one."
