The regular meeting of the Yorktown city council took place on Monday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation were said, then the floor was opened to public comments. The only speaker was Gloria Macias.

“I’m concerned about a water bill that I’m being forced to pay,” she explained. “It’s not in my name, it’s under a lady that lived there prior to me owning the house. I’m actually buying the house, but the deed is still not in my name. I have done renovations to the house and I’m to the point where I’m renting the house now and there’s an outstanding bill of $547 due at this time. I had nothing to do with the house at the time or with the lady that lived there, therefore I feel like it’s very unjust and why do I have to pay her bill in the amount of $547? The other question is, how did it get to $547? I have lived in Yorktown all my life and my water bill has never been $547, I have never stopped paying my water service, I always have water service paid on time, and if I were ever to stop paying it, I’m sure it would be cut off the very first month.

“I did speak to Gloria, and she said, ‘Oh, I did not cut her off because I did it from the kindness of my heart, a lot of people here know that I will work with people,’ Unfortunately, she has never been very friendly with me and she has never showed me kindness of her heart, therefore I think if she’s going to show kindness of her heart to anybody, then she should be responsible for paying the water bill at $547.”

“I apologize if we had a city staff member who didn’t treat you like you felt you should be treated, I apologize for that.” Mayor Baker said. “You and I talked on the phone, and I think that we’ve had the ability to talk on a professional and level basis, you heard me, I heard you. So if we had a city staff member that didn’t treat you as you deserve to be treated, I apologize for that personally. And I will address that."
