The Nordheim Volunteer Fire Department along with five firefighters attended a Propane Emergencies Training at Texas A&M TEEX Brayton Field in College Station the week of Sept. 26-27. The training was hosted and sponsored by Propane Council of Texas. The five attendees included Chief Derrick Green, Assistant Chief Steven Caves, President Billy Fischer, and firefighters Marsha Knight and Stacy Gunderson.

The two-day training consisted of tons of learning about different types of propane tanks and cylinders. Courses focused on how to approach different types of fires including tests on storage tanks and transport trailers. Courses included Physical Properties and Characteristics of Propane, ASME Propane Tank and DOT Propane Cylinders, Cooling the Propane Tank and Controlling the Fire, Propane Bulk Plants and Bulk Storage Tanks, and Propane Bulk Transportation, Highway, and Rail.

The group also went through field training to get a grasp of what to do when called upon. Field exercises the crew progressed through were Propane Bulk Storage Fire, Residential Tank Fire, and LPG Pipeline Fire.

Overall, the experience and knowledge gained was very successful in helping increase the ability and firefighters' knowledge. The Nordheim Fire Department hopes to keep growing and serving the community as fast as possible when called upon. The department hopes to also make an addition of a new fire truck.
