A call of a disturbance involving a firearm came in at about 4:15 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22, at the 400 block of West Hamilton in Cuero.
According to a press release from Cuero Police Department, “Officers quickly located the suspect and a standoff ensued in the middle of the roadway. Officers attempted negotiations with the suspect and eventually deployed less lethal tactics in an effort to resolve the situation.”
The release went on to state that the suspect fled on foot and was pursued by officers. “During the foot pursuit, the suspect discharged a firearm in the direction of responding officers at which time one officer from the Cuero Police Department discharged his weapon striking the suspect one time,” the release said.
EMS personnel had already been requested to stage nearby and began life saving procedures shortly after the suspect was detained. The suspect, Patrick J. Boatwright, 44, of Cuero, was transported to Cuero Regional Hospital where he later died from the gunshot wound.
The Cuero Police Department requested the Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers Division to review the incident and lead the investigation. Which the release states is CPD procedure. The officer involved has been placed on administrative duties until the conclusion of the investigation by the Texas Rangers.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be presented to the DeWitt County District Attorney’s Office for a Grand Jury review.
The Cuero PD was assisted by the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office, Yoakum PD and Cuero EMS.
