Prayer bears

Christmas weather may not be evident each winter in Cuero, but the spirit of giving is all around. Evelyn Boedeker shares in that spirit by making prayer bears through the First United Methodist Church for anyone needing prayer. She takes the time to make the bears, while also caring for her husband who is battling cancer.
Emily Cheatham and the United Methodist Women came up with the idea about a year ago, and Boedeker has ran with it.
“I was active in church, but then my husband got cancer, so I have to stay at home more,” she said. “They needed bears, so I thought, “I can do that.””
The material for the bears is donated with supplies coming in each time she runs out.
Before the prayer bears ministry started, the United Methodist Women also quilted blankets for awhile. The bears are distributed throughout south Texas.
