The Board of Trustees of Cuero ISD sat down this past Thursday, June 23, for their regular monthly meeting. After the public meeting was called to order at approximately 6:35 p.m. Cuero Area Soccer Association (CASA) president Bobby Ramos began his three-minute presentation.

Over the last several school board meetings, Ramos has made a consistent push to the board about contemplating and researching the idea of adding a soccer program to Cuero.

“All but two teams in our new UIL region have boys and girls soccer. The only two schools that do not field a varsity soccer team are West Orange Stark and Cuero,” spoke Ramos.

Ramos sighted that he had reached out to West Orange-Stark earlier that morning.

“They said they had soccer back when they were a 5A, but TEA took them over sometime back and they needed budget cuts. That was one of the first things that got cut, plus their enrollment totals went down,” shared Ramos.

“Their football field, they just put up has soccer lines and they hope to field soccer soon, which would leave Cuero as the odd man out and the last team standing in that region.”

Ramos reminded the board that recently Hallettsville, a 3A school roughly 35 miles away, unanimously approved the addition of a soccer program for next school year.
