Ruby blown across the finish line

The 45th Annual Cuero Turkeyfest and Great Gobbler Gallop concluded with Paycheck of Worthington, Minnnesota winning the top prize. Paycheck held a strong lead after the first leg in Worthington and finished with an overall time of five minutes and 49.53 seconds. Cuero’s Ruby Begonia finished with a time of eight minutes and 37.15 seconds.

Both birds were hesitant to start. The race began but neither Ruby nor Paycheck would move. Thinking the heat may be a factor, Cuero race team members Denise Goebel (middle) and Angie Cuellar (right) decided to try blowing on Ruby to get her going and it worked. As Jimmy Martin (left) and Keith Goebel (not pictured) anchored the sides to keep Ruby headed in the right direction, Denise Goebel and Cuellar kept the air on Ruby until she crossed the finish line.
