Tee off for a good cause
Cuero High School’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is preparing for summer camp. To help support the student-athletes who will attend, they are having a golf fundraiser June 2 at Riverside Golf Course in Victoria, starting at 8:30 a.m.
“This is going to be our second year that the [Cuero] FCA is taking kids to camp,” FCA coordinator Wes Condra said. “We’re a ministry that seeks to grow high school athletes and middle school athletes in their relationship with Jesus Christ using the platform of sports. We teach them about how to compete for an audience of One.”
The camp provides an opportunity for kids to get out of Cuero and to experience things that they would not have an opportunity to experience.
“We go to Texas A&M, and these kids are put together with other high school athletes across the state of Texas,” Condra noted. “It doesn’t matter small school, big school, they’re all grouped together. They’re paired up usually with a college athlete.”
Last year, Cuero athletes had a bunch of football players from Texas A&M University, the University of Texas and the University of Houston. They also have volleyball for the girls and basketball. There are all kinds of different sports.
“It’s a really neat opportunity for all of them,” Condra said.
The camp is also a positive impact for the community.
“Kids are able to go, and they’re really able to get poured into and really learn and grow a lot and not just through sports but also spiritually,” Condra stated. “They take that back to our community here in Cuero, and they’re able to share that with their teammates, family, friends and school. It just creates a real positive environment.”
Seventeen kids from Cuero went last year, but that number is expected to double.
“They came back and told their friends about it,” Condra said. “They’re really excited.”
The golf fundraiser will allow FCA to alleviate some of the expenses of the camp.
“Cuero ISD and Cuero FCA are teaming up together this year to do a fundraiser golf tournament,” Condra said. “Unfortunately, it’s gonna be in Victoria this year, because the golf course here in Cuero is re-doing their greens, so we couldn’t have it here or else we really would like to have it here.”
The cost is $140 per team ($35 per individual), which includes breakfast, lunch and carts. Prizes will be awarded to top drive and closest to pin on select holes, as well as top teams.
“If anybody is interested in donating or sponsoring holes or anything, they’re free to donate or help in whatever way,” Condra stated. “We’re just looking for a community-wide effort to help our kids here in Cuero and really impact our kids for the future.”
FCA is not just a one time, summer event. During the fall, they have meetings twice a month, and in the spring, they have meetings once a month.
“We’ve done community service projects,” Condra said. “The main thing with FCA is how it helps our athletes who are dominated by sports to really use the platform that God has given them to reach out. When they go out and they compete, we teach them to compete for Christ and to show that to others that are around them.”
In only two years of working with FCA, Condra has seen its impact.
“Going back to my first year here, we had a senior girl, Claire Laging, and it was amazing to watch her growth and excitement,” Condra recalled. “Last year, she went to TCU. For her whole first year, she kept emailing me about all these ways that God was moving in her life. She didn’t play sports, but she was able to get plugged into different organizations. She started doing sports journalism. It was just cool to see how God used FCA and used the things that she experienced here to really propel her over there.”
