Three students nominated for Yorktown Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Student Award
Joshua Garcia is currently a senior at Yorktown High School. He holds a strong passion for athletics, especially football and basketball. He participated on the varsity football, basketball, and track teams his sophomore, junior, and senior year. While playing Joshua had many injuries which affected his playing time.
Joshua never lost his strong passion for sports and was always motivated to better himself in every way possible. While Joshua is very involved in athletics, he has always stayed focused on the academic side of school. He has been on the AB Honor roll all throughout his high school career and is a member of many organizations such as, National Honor Society and Student Council.
Not only is Joshua active in school but outside school as well. He enjoys working out and spending time with his family and friends. As a dedicated student, he will attend Victoria College in the fall to obtain an Associates of Science degree. Upon the completion of this goal he will then apply for the Texas Department of Public Safety Training Academy with hopes of becoming a Texas State Trooper.
Kathryn Gwosdz’s main focus through high school has always been academics and volleyball. She has received Outstanding Student Award in many subjects including English, Science, Math, and History and has been on the A Honor roll all throughout high school. Kathryn currently serves as class Vice President and is a leader in many clubs and organizations such as Student Council Vice President, FFA President, and NHS Vice President. She is always challenging herself by participating in various contests such as the Voice of Democracy Essay, which she has won for the past 3 years.
Kathryn has also participated in many Leadership Development events and Career Development contests through FFA including Creed Speaking, livestock judging, and her new favorite, Dairy Judging. Her love for Dairy Judging is quite new and she has placed as high as 1st in Area and 7th in State. She also represents her school in UIL by participating in Current Events and Mathematics.
While Kathryn has always put academics first, she also has a strong passion for volleyball. She has been on the varsity volleyball team since her freshman year and was captain her junior and senior year. This year she was able to lead her team to an undefeated district championship and received the honors of District MVP, 1st Team All-Area, and All-State Academic Kathryn is not only involved in her school but her church as well. She is a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church where she alter serves for Sunday Mass and volunteers annually at the church and community hall picnic.
After graduation Kathryn will be attending Texas A&M University with a major in Allied Health. She plans on becoming a registered nurse and then eventually going back to get her Master’s Degree to become a nurse anesthetist. While Kathryn does have very big goals and plans, she will always cherish this small town where she grew up and thanks them for being a part of her journey.
Katie Hughes is currently a senior at Yorktown High School. Throughout the past four years, she has accomplished a wide variety of academic, athletic, professional, and personal achievements, Katie currently holds a 4.00 GPA, has held a place on the Distinguished Honor Roll from 2017 to 2020, and has been awarded a total of 14 Yorktown High School subject awards–which honor the top-ranking student in each subject for the entirety of the school year—include English, Spanish, Biology, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Physics.
Katie has also succeeded in academic competitions throughout her high school career, holding spots on Yorktown’s Social Studies, Current Events, Mathematics, and Calculator Readiness U.I.L. teams, being awarded “Best of Texas 9th place Overall Calculator” in 2019. Katie has been an active member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Yorktown’s Math Club, Future Farmers of America and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, with notable offices held including Class President, National Honor Society President and Secretary, Future Farmers of America Vice President, and Student Council Secretary, Katie was also elected Homecoming Duchess in 2017 by her peers.
Katie has succeeded in realms outside academia as well, holding team spots on Varsity Track and Varsity Golf, Katie was a Golf Regional Qualifier in 2017 and a Track Area Qualifier in 2017 and 2018. She has also been a member of Yorktown High School’s Varsity Cheerleading Team all four years in high school.
Her senior year, Katie was voted Cheer Captain and was awarded All American Cheerleader by the Universal Cheerleading Association. Regarding community involvement, Katie has volunteered for local and state organizations including Yorktown Lions Club Youth Basketball teams, Yorktown City Park, Oakmont Park Fort Worth, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Church Community Thanksgiving, and the Golden Crescent Food Bank. Regarding the future, Katie Hughes will be graduating from Yorktown High School in May 2020 with twenty-four dual credit hours.
She recently attended Camp Cardiac at the University of St. Thomas in Houston to help prepare for her future endeavors in the Sciences. Katie plans to attend the University of Texas in Austin, where she has been accepted into the College of Natural Sciences Pre-Pharmacy Program. Katie plans to study Pharmacy with a Concentration in Oncology Pharmacy and Research.
