With competition season upcoming, Yorktown ISD’s band director, Larry Barnett, discussed the band’s progress and challenges lately.

“We’re doing okay,” Barnett stated. “It’s been a little bit of a struggle this fall, I don’t know why exactly, but the numbers are up, and that’s good.”

There are 86 band students total this year, 42 beginners, 14 in 7th grade, and 30 in high school. The number of students in a band last year was 57.

“A lot of great things are happening,” Barnett continued, “with the band boosters, and a new drum line coming in January, and I’ve been doing work for a new band trailer proposal. Getting band shirts for all of our 6th and 7th grade band students, so there’s a lot of positive things. It looks really good for the years ahead. Progress is a little slower than I’d hoped, but it’s still good.”
