Since the very first days of the settlement of Yorktown, entertainment, singing, and dancing has been a part of Yorktown. Those celebrations big and small are just the culture of Yorktown. Through-out the year the people of Yorktown cannot yearn for “something to do.”. There are always some sporting events to attend such as Basketball, Baseball, Track Events, and Football games of the Yorktown schools. Each Memorial Day the VFW, the VFW Auxiliary, Veterans, and the Chamber of Commerce hold a moving and honorable service. In the last few years it has been at the base of the Vietnam Memorial. Although the city or Chamber of Commerce do not sponsor anything on the 4th of July the USA Flags are strategically placed on one block of Main Street and in the early darkness Skinny’s Fireworks gives the skies of Metting Road a magnificent display for all who want to find places to park in the area. During the first third full weekend of October the entire city becomes one of festivities with Western Days. A children’s parade, a Grand Parade, Cook-offs, vendors around the park, and to the children’s delight a huge carnival is held. On November 11th a very patriotic inspirational program is held to honor all veterans of our military in the United States. During the month of December the Historical Society sets up magnificent exhibits for all to come admire.
