Two scholarships awarded to police academy cadets

On April 10, Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club Texas Chapter 48 awarded two $1,000 scholarships to cadets in the Victoria college Police Academy. Shown receiving the scholarships are Cadet Kenneth Wilson and Cadet Isabella Martinez. Making the presentation is Shelly Jones, widow of Cuero Police Officer Sam Jones for whom the scholarship fund is named. The Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club is a non-profit fraternal organization consisting of active and retired law enforcement officers who enjoy riding motorcycles. In the spring of 1974, several law enforcement officers from the Bangor, Maine (USA) area met and formed a small, local motorcycle club. Soon, Blue Knight chapters were formed in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and beyond. With the addition of Canada, and later Australia, the Blue Knights became an international organization with additional chapters in Great Britain, Germany and throughout Europe.

Hard hitting storm

High wind, rain and large hail hit Cuero Sunday morning. Many residents had broken windows in their homes and vehicles as well as skylights and yard decor being broken during the storm. Golf ball size hail and even larger for some residents was reported. About 50 City of Cuero homes were without power while the storm passed through. City electric crews had power restored in less than three hours once safe weather conditions allowed them to begin work.

Friends celebrates 20 years

When Sandra Simon opened Friends on Main she did not know what the future of the business would hold. “I really don’t know what my expectations were at the time. I enjoy the shopping and reselling, but I don’t really think I thought about being here 20 years later. It has gone by fast!”

Country Opry May 7

Yorktown’s 175th Anniversary Committee, along with Aunt Di’s Kountry Kitchen, will hold a Country Opry on Sunday, May 7, beginning at 3:30p.m. A $10 door donation is being requested to help defray expenses of staging the anniversary celebration in the park on June 16 and 17. Performing at the Opry will be The Almost Famous Band, Vickie Cross, Jesse Mapes, Tiffany Lemke, Blair Kudelka, Jay Metting and Emma Meyer. Hamburgers and fries will be available for purchase. Come out and enjoy an afternoon of music while helping to support 175 years of Yorktown.
