After such gruesome stories of murder in the area of Yorktown the name John Wesley Hardin is associated. To this musing mouse, he is a hero, and that is shared by many to the point that each year at his gravesite many gather to his honor. Yes, it is true as he states in his autobiography which is housed in the Yorktown Historical Museum that he may have killed as many as forty men all in self defense.

The DeWitt County Shutterbugs announced the winners of the 2023 DeWitt County Shutterbugs Photo Contest and Exhibition. This year’s contest included 465 photographs, 35 of those were in youth divisions.

Yorktown’s Emie Bolting signs with Victoria College

From a young age, Yorktown High School senior Emie Bolting decided she wanted to play college volleyball and this week she achieved her goal. On March 30 in the YHS gymnasium with coaches, family, administrators and friends proudly watching, Emie signed her letter of intent to play volleyball at Victoria College. Beginning this fall she will be playing Division 1 NJCAA level volleyball as a Victoria Pirate.

Senate passes tax cut package

The Texas Senate last week unanimously approved a $16.5 billion package to lower property taxes and inject billions of dollars into public schools. As reported by the Texas Tribune, the three separate bills require the state to send at least $5.38 billion to public schools while at the same time raising the state’s homestead exemption from $40,000 to $70,000, with an additional $20,000 exemption for homeowners 65 and older.

The DeWitt County VVA is hosting Morning Coffee and Donuts, on the first and third Wednesdays of the month, for all Veterans of any era. Coffee and donuts will be at the DeWitt County Veteran’s Center, 901 TX-72, Yorktown. Doors will be open from 7 to 9 a.m. There is no charge for Veterans, just looking forward to coffee, donuts, conversation and comradery.
