DCSO recovers $305 thousand stolen funds

DeWitt County officials hosted a press conference Monday morning to announce that an investigation through the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) successfully led to the recovery of roughly $305 thousand in county funds stolen through a cyber-crime in June. DCSO Lieutenant Bethany Hobbs said she presented probable cause evidence of the crime and bank account(s) with stolen county funds to 377th State District Judge Eli Garza last week.

Fikac earns Coach of the Year nod

The Cuero Gobbler football team is used to having a successful season, but this one had a few unique circumstances. Largely, it was the first season for new Athletic Director and Head Coach Jerod Fikac, who was hired in March of 2022.

Local World War II vet reflects on 95 years of life

DeWitt County residents may recognize 95-year-old Gregorio Salazar from his frequent lawn-mowing escapades atop his trusty John Deere riding mower. But there is much more to this local World War II veteran than meets the eye. Possibly the oldest World War II service member remaining in the county, Mr. Salazar’s 95 years of life demonstrate a love for family, country, and community.
