Chief Lewis retires after 50 years in law enforcement

Twelve years as chief in Cuero, two as a detective with Port Lavaca Police Department (PD), seven as patrol captain and ultimately chief deputy with DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office, a decade as a detective in Friendswood, two years with Jacksonville PD as a patrol officer, four as police chief in Berryville and 12 with Galveston County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO)… Cuero Chief of Police Jay Lewis is about as seasoned as criminal justice professionals come.

Raymie Zella, City Manager, announces plans to retire

As the Jan. 9 Cuero City Council came to a close, one last announcement was shared. Raymie Zella announced his plan to retire as City Manager for the City of Cuero, projecting a target retirement date at the end of June or possibly July. Zella shared in the letter he read to the City Council that this would provide ample time to find the next person to lead the City of Cuero staff. Following his announcement, he was thanked by Mayor Sara Post Meyer for his service and dedication during his tenure and was en a standing ovation by City Council and City of Cuero staff in the audience.

Speaker open to resort-style casinos in state

House Speaker Dade Phelan, R-Beaumont, told The Dallas Morning News and other media outlets that he is open to bringing resort-style casinos to Texas. But don’t expect to find slot machines in 7-Eleven stores if casino gambling is legalized.
