Largest wildfire in state history still raging

A wildfire in the Texas Panhandle has consumed more than 1 million acres and as of Sunday was just 15% contained, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. It is the largest wildfire in Texas history.

State Sales Tax Revenue Totaled $3.7 Billion in February

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar today said state sales tax revenue totaled $3.69 billion in February, .05 percent more than in February 2023. The majority of February sales tax revenue is based on sales made in January and remitted to the agency in February.

DeWitt County Retired School Personnel Meet

The DeWitt County Retired School Personnel met in February at the CISD Boardroom with President Sandra Tate calling the meeting to order. Before the business meeting began, the group remembered members Laura Whitson, Debra Baros, Becky Sprinkle, and founding member Mary Wood, all who died in the past month.

Man sentenced to 40 years in prison

On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, The Honorable Julie Bauknight of the 267th Judicial District Court sentenced Dondre Carter to 40 years in prison. Carter, 35, has served time in the De Witt County Jail for other charges including failure to maintain financial responsibility, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, engaging in organized criminal activity and for violation of probation in 2022 for the aggravated assault charge. Jail records also show he served prison time in 2011.

Walk-ins are also always welcome and needed! High blood pressure, diabetes, tattoos and serving in the military are not deferral. A lot of people assume they’re ineligible to donate and that’s not always the case.

As stated much earlier, in 1848 the only way to communicate with family or friends was by written letter. These letters had to be handed to someone trusted that might pass it on to another who could be trusted until it reached its destination. This took months sometimes. Then the telegraph came into being but that was to be at an expense and had to be used wisely and sparingly.
