The Yorktown High School varsity cheerleaders hosted a “Princess Mini-Cheer Camp” this past week July 25-28. It was a huge success with 80 campers. It was hosted by the YHS cheer squad with help from the YJHS cheer squad.

Each day the campers were taught different material including cheers, chants and dances. The varsity squad had a lot to teach after coming back from the UCA camp the week before. The campers learned so much all week long, which culminated in a performance on Thursday, the final day. The gym was packed with family, friends, staff, administration and school board members. The junior high cheer squad kicked things off by performing a cheer, followed by the varsity squad who performed a dance and then each age group of campers followed showing off what they learned all week. Head Cheerleader senior Aubri Longoria, senior cheerleader Ayana Longoria and senior cheer manager DaKielynn Campbell were also recognized and given a small gift from cheer sponsor Mendy Moreno for this being their “last” mini-cheer camp.

Senior Aubri Longoria said, “This year’s mini-cheer camp was very memorable because it brought back the memories of when I did mini-cheer camp as a little girl. Teaching these little girls and setting an example for them is by far the best feeling. I am looking forward to my last year in high school and I hope to make many unforgettable memories with my cheer team.”

Junior Madison Green said, “I remember attending mini-camp throughout my childhood and feeling the kind of energy and excitement that came from it. Now as a cheerleader I am extremely grateful to be a leader and role model to these girls. They have taught me so much and have given me so many fun memories that I can carry with me.”

“Mini-camp is always one of my favorite weeks out of the year. The memories made at mini-camp are always my favorite and the girls have the best attitudes. They always come high-spirited and ready to learn. This gets our cheer squad excited for the upcoming year,” said sophomore Sydnie Krueger.

Sophomore Brycen Allman said, “I will always remember this year’s mini-camp and working with the three and four-year-olds. While it was challenging at times, we still found a way to have fun. I can’t wait to not only see them go through the years of mini-cheer camp but also to watch them grow as individuals.”

According to Mrs. Moreno, “Our mini-cheer camp was extremely successful due to the hard work put in by the squad. The cheerleaders came in eager to teach the mini-campers all that they had learned and the minis came in so excited and ready. Since this was my first year as cheer sponsor, I wasn’t sure what all to expect, but seeing the packed gym for Thursday’s final performance I knew the girls had done a great job! We are looking forward to a great year of cheer.”
