Laurie Jo Barfield

Laurie Jo Barfield of Yorktown passed away September 9, 2024 after a courageous battle against liver cancer. She was born June 14, 1956 to Joe and Evelyn Spies Barfield. Laurie graduated from Yorktown High School in 1974. She was a physical therapy assistant and home health provider for William Niemeier for many years. Laurie always said that caring for Will “saved her life” after Nichole died. Laurie and Doug spent many hours riding their Harley and participating as members of Gypsy Motor Cycle Club of Goliad. They also enjoyed their trips to Coushatta in Louisiana. Laurie provided a loving and safe environment for her mother when she was no longer able to live alone.

She is survived by her husband Doug Riggs Jr., brothers Thomas (Rebecca) Barfield, David (Gracie) Barfield, stepchildren Doug (Martie) Riggs III, Sherry (Trino) Barrera, Erich Riggs and step grandchildren Kristopher Gonzales, Jax Barrera and Sloan Barrera. She is also survived by nephew Nathan (Kara) Barfield, nieces Melissa (Tim) Inman, Lynn (Hector) Guerra and Michelle (Jeff) Hameister. She is survived by her “little brother” Walter (Jeanie) Gohmert and family Bryan (Brandie) Gohmert, Brantley and Brock. She is also survived by her loving great nieces and nephews Joshua (Kaitlinn) Guerra, Makenzie Guerra, Chloe Guerra, Kolten Hameister, Kayden Hameister, Sterling Inman, Kelsey Inman, and Jackson Inman. She leaves behind multiple loving relatives and friends in the Yorktown community.

She is preceded in death by daughter Nicole Jo McCoy, her parents, Aunt Eva Marie (Harold) Gohmert, and Grandma Lily Spies.

Memorial service will be September 21, 2024 at 2 pm at Massey Funeral Home Yorktown, Texas. Laurie requested that her memorial be a celebration of life not of mourning, colorful attire is appropriate.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church or Hospice of South Texas.

Special thanks to Sherry Barrera and Rebecca Barfield for their unending support and loving care during her multiple hospital stays and trips to San Antonio for medical appointments. Thanks to Cheryl Schwab for providing transportation to and from the various appointments. Thanks to Emily Pena for the nursing care she provided so Laurie could spend her last days in her home surrounded by her many friends and family as well as her loving pets Mia and Bella. Thanks to Cindy Cornish for covering the “night shift” during Laurie’s last hospitalization so that she would never be alone. Thanks to all of her dear friends and classmates for “The Last Hooray”, she was so happy that day. Thanks to Citizens Home Health and Hospice of South Texas for helping Laurie during her last journey.
