Barney Ross Whitehead passed away surrounded by family in Cuero, Texas on Feb. 22, 2023 at age 88. He grew up in the Smiley area and moved to Houston shortly before marrying his wife. In Houston they raised their two boys while he worked as a boilermaker. He was a skilled smoker of brisket, a talented welder, and a creative landscape painter. He loved his sons, his daughtersin- law, and grandkids. After retiring he moved to Cuero, where he was an active member of the St. John Lutheran Church of Westhoff. He also provided advice to the youngsters at the table in Cuero’s Dairy Queen most mornings. In 2018 he moved to Portland, Oregon to be near his eldest son and his family. There he continued to paint, educate his grandkids on life in rural Texas, and regularly point out the differences between Oregon and Texas.

He is survived by his brothers Vernon Whitehead and Roy Whitehead; his sisters, Pauline Kuecker, Frances Krause and Annie Rose Kolb, and his son, Thomas Ross Whitehead. His grandkids, Kennedy Jean Whitehead, Amelia Rainbolt Whitehead, and Baxter Ross Whitehead will surely miss the visits with PawPaw.

He is preceded in death by his son, Otis Lee Whitehead; his wife of 25 years, Imogene Whitehead (Hinze); brothers, Chester, Otis & James Whitehead; and sister, Edna Mae.

A memorial service was held at St. John Lutheran Church in Westhoff on Monday, April 10, at 11 a.m. with a reception following in the fellowship hall. There will be no viewing or graveside service.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John Lutheran Church Westhoff or Hospice of South Texas.
