Senior Master Sergeant (Retired) DeWitt H. (Tony) Toenjes passed away after a short illness at a Corsicana, Texas hospital on June 1, 2019. He was 95 years of age.
Tony was born on Aug. 2, 1923 in DeWitt County to John and Marie Steffan Toenjes. Tony went to Cuero schools where he was a member of the football, basketball and track teams. He graduated from high school in 1941. After graduating at the age of 17, Tony enlisted in US Navy. In the Navy, Tony was an aviation specialist. Tony served in the Pacific during WWII.
He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946 and reenlisted in the newly formed branch of the armed forces, the US Air Force in 1947 where he served as a crew chief and flight mechanic in both CA and WA. Tony was then sent to England. In 1954, Tony returned to the US where he became an aircraft maintainer at Sheppard AFB, TX. Next, Tony reenlisted into the Training Command and became a Technical Instructor teaching aircraft systems and was sent to McDill AFB, Florida. He returned to Shepperd AFT, TX in 1959 where he retired from the armed forces in 1963 after 22 years of service. Shortly thereafter, Tony moved his family to Tampa, Florida where he was employed with the US Postal Service. In 1986 Tony again retired and decided to move and settle down in his beloved Cuero, Texas where he could easily follow the Cuero Gobbler Football Team. In 1997, Tony then married his second wife, Rosa Mae Cook, and became a member of the First United Methodist Church. Tony was also a lifetime member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled Veterans Association.
Tony loved sports, fishing and good weather. He also made it a point to take a daily walk and stayed in good physical shape throughout his life.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Lois Ledford Toenjes, a brother, Wardell Toenjes, a daughter, Linda Blanton and a grandson, Michael Conley. Tony’s second wife, Rosa Mae Toenjes passed away on July 8, 2019. Tony is survived by a daughter, Judy Ferreira of Albuquerque, NM, a niece, Loy (Kenneth) Tieken of Cuero, a nephew, Chad Toenjes of Mesa, Colorado, his sister-in-law, Jernell Toenjes of Cuero, grandsons, Paul (Michelle) Ferreira and Justin Ferreira, great grandsons, Jacob Ferreira and Tagg Ferreira of Florida, two stepdaughters, Kathy Bearden (Jerry), of Corsicana, Texas, Dorothy Mayer (Steve), of Cameron, Texas, a step grandson, Robbie Bearden (Sheryl), of Rice, Texas, a step granddaughter, Traci Talafuse (Gary) of Murchison, Texas and many step great grandchildren, many great nieces and nephews and friends.
A graveside memorial service with Military Honors will be held at Hillside Cemetery on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Ron Welborn officiating. Reception immediately following at First United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to United Methodist Church.
