Evelyn Johnson

Evelyn Arlene McPherson Johnson was born, Oct. 29, 1931 to Ora Beatrice Avant and Andrew David McPherson in DeWitt County, Cuero, Texas. She received her formal education in the Public School System of Cuero, Texas, graduating from Daule High School.

Funeral Services were held, Saturday, May 16, at noon at the New Union Missionary Baptist Church 818 N. Mittman Street, San Antonio, Texas, with the Rev. Howard Newton Officiating. Burial took place at the Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Evelyn went on to further her education attending Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas, earning a Degree in Education. Evelyn met the love of her life, T. S. Johnson, Jr. and they united in holy matrimony. They lived a beautiful life rearing their two children, one son, Christopher and their beautiful daughter, Lia. Evelyn was a very elegant phenomenal Lady. She was always one that would greet you with a smile of joy and happiness.

Evelyn was a vital part of the educational system. She retired as an educator with the San Antonio Independent School District. She was very proud of the students she taught who are now giving leadership in their community as principals, counselors, teachers and always ready to greet her as their first grade teacher.

Evelyn was a very active member of many community organizations. She was a part of the River City Chapter Top Ladies of Distinction, where she served two outstanding terms as advisor of Top Teens of America, twice as Chairperson of the Annual Luncheons and the most recent one, the year of 2007 “Distinguished Educators Luncheon.” She was the first Vice President of the Chapter and was recognized as Top Lady Of The Year in 2008. Evelyn received numerous awards, honors and recognitions. Among the awards she was Woman of the Year for Bowden Chapter Business and Professional Women and served two terms as President of this distinguished organization. One of her most cherished accomplishments was her being recognized as an Outstanding Educator.

Evelyn had a relationship with the Lord throughout her life and knew that without Him she would not be. She was a very faithful and active member of New Union Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. H. E. Newton. Evelyn was a part of many auxiliaries and truly served the Lord and her church. Evelyn touched many hearts with joy and was a loving, beautiful ray of sunshine. She was an Angel on this earth with a purpose from God and was loving to people everywhere.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Ora Beatrice Avant and Andrew David McPherson, her husband, T. S. Johnson, Jr. and one grandson, Eric Scott. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her son, Christopher Keith Johnson (Christiana) and her daughter, Lia Johnson; grandchildren, Keevonn Johnson (her right hand), Alethia Johnson, Christopher Scott, Kristian Johnson, Marcus Johnson, Christopher Johnson, Jr., Arkesia Johnson, Cydine Johnson, K’Den Johnson, Akhia Johnson numerous, great grandchildren; two nieces that were very near and dear, Glodean Mitchell and Kathyern L. Green; three brothers-in-law, John Johnson (Shirley), Billy Johnson (Noyce), Raymond Johnson (Jessie) and a host of other loving nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
