James Franklin Alston passed to his heavenly home Monday, April 4, in San Antonio at the age of 86.

James was born in Pandora, Texas, to Travis Alston and Annie Lou Moseley Alston on October 16, 1935.

James is preceded in death by his wife, Doris Mae Alston; parents; brother, Winford Alston; sisters, Mildred Rhoades, Lucille Grooms, Lola Slater and son-in-law, Howard Morton.

He is survived and will be greatly missed by his children, Barbara Ann Pape (Roland), Glenna Faye Dear (David), LaVonnia Gail Morton, Brian Keith Alston (Kris); grandchildren, Kenneth Dear (Jennifer), Jason Mooney (Kira), Kimberly Howard (Lance), Wade Pape (Lora), Justin Mooney (Glenda); great-grandchildren, Christopher Morton (Ana), Camden, Kale and Colson Mooney, Kade and Kass Pape, Madisyn, Presley and Bransen Mooney, Keith, Katelyn and Kyle Dear, Michael, Emilie and Matthew Howard; great-great-grandchildren, Ariel and Christopher Morton, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Inez Bues, Kathy Hengst; numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family and many friends.

James worked in the music business for 50 years with RCA, BMG and Arista Records. His partnership with these organizations led to a life-long career of working with many notable artists, such as Charley Pride, Alan Jackson, Clint Black and many more, in which he was instrumental in starting their careers.

Visitation will be held at Finch Funeral Chapel, La Vernia, Monday, April 11, from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 12, at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 5520 South Flores Street, San Antonio.

The Rev. Dr. Edward J. Kern will officiate the services with interment following at Mission Park South.

Memorial contribution may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the charity of one’s choice.
