Since seventh grade, Brooke Wendel’s goal was set on running at the collegiate level. Early morning trainings, limited time off throughout the year and a focus on school and community involvement has all led to this moment. Last Friday, April 30, Wendel signed her National Letter of Intent (NLI) to run on the cross country and track teams at Tarleton University.
“It’s definitely a surreal moment,” Wendel said. “Now, for it to be happening, it’s unexplainable. I’m excited to be going to the college level and keep doing better.”
In only his first year as Cuero’s girls track coach, Tom Dracos has seen just how dedicated Wendel is to her craft of running.
“Any chance you get a chance to see a kid that’s gonna have a chance to continue doing what they love and get an education with it, it’s a special thing,” Dracos said. “I know going 1,000 years ago when I signed, it was a special moment and what a change in my life it was. I think she deserves it, and she’s worked definitely hard enough to get it. I’m really proud of her today, and her next step’s coming.”
