5 Wildcats compete at state golf tournament

This year’s UIL 2A State Golf Tournament was held at Lions Municipal in Austin. The “Muny” has hosted many notable golfers including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw and more recently Jordan Spieth. It also hosts Texas’ oldest amateur tournament, the Firecracker Open.

The team consisting of Drew Alexander, Cameron Willis, Dalton Eckhardt, Konnor Sullivan and Trent Foerster shot a combined score of 393 at the conclusion of their first round. Alexander was six strokes out of the lead headed into the second day. Eckhardt would move to the number two team slot after posting the team’s second-best score on day one (96). The team would conclude with a total 794 over the two days and finish in tenth place overall. Freshman, Trent Foerster would play one of his best rounds of the season.

On day two, Alexander would battle back into medal contention. He would start the day on hole 10. This hole leaves the players with decisions to make, should they lay up or instead go uphill and over water on a narrow fairway? Alexander knew he had strokes to make up and selected driver. His first shot would be left and in a tree therefore it resulted in a bogey. He would string together a run of pars through holes 11-15. He would narrowly miss an eagle opportunity on hole 14 and par hole 15 after landing to the right of the green on his first shot of the par three. Hole 16 is the signature hole of the course and is referred to as the “Hogan Hole”. Alexander had parred this difficult par four the first day but day two the hole would demonstrate exactly how relentless it could be. Alexander’s first swing seemed to be good as the ball went down the fairway. Unfortunately, the ball came to a stop on some gravel that was under the overhang of a tree in the fairway. There was water ahead, trees to the right and left, and the green was uphill.
