Eight Cuero athletes will ascend upon one of the biggest high school sporting events in the state this Thursday. Two years in the making, the UIL state track & field meet is finally back. Cuero’s qualifiers will compete alongside the rest of 4A on May 6 at the University of Texas at Austin’s Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Senior Davyon Williams has advanced in high jump after narrowly missing out as a sophomore. He will be joined by the girls 800 meter relay team of Loren Washington, Mackenzie Blain, Ibree Coe and Ricquel Joubert with alternates Zha’Vanna Gray and Ta’Kiya Morris. Blain is also reached the state meet in pole vault.
On Wednesday, April 28, Cuero received word that Brooke Wendel would also make the trip to Austin and run the mile after a girl from Fredericksburg had to scratch.
“I think that getting kids to regionals is an accomplishment, but getting them all the way to state is another thing,” girls track head coach Tom Dracos said. “The girls have really come together, as far as the relay goes. They did a really good job. They’re really proud of themselves, and they should be.”
