With a family background in coaching, Chad Hartley has taken the reins of Cuero’s boys basketball program. Hartley brings with him the better part of two decades as a basketball coach, including over 14 years as a 6A assistant at Houston schools and last year at Waco Midway.

This will be his second head coaching stint following a four-year stop in Edna. After spending nearly 15 years in Houston, Hartley was told if he wanted to become a head coach, he’d need to start out at smaller schools.

“I was told to get a head job you had to go to the small world,” he recalled. That’s exactly what he did. In his final season at Edna, the Cowboys won their first district title since 2010.

“We got better every year,” Hartley said. “I just love watching kids grow and becoming young men.”

Along with having a father who coached basketball and playing at an All-American level at Houston Baptist University, Hartley was convinced coaching was the path for him following his first year of college.
