Bears defeat Gobblers

For only the second time this season and first time since before Thanksgiving, Gobbler basketball were home. An early three-pointer by freshman Tycen Williams had Cuero on top, 7-4, but that was quickly erased by La Vernia’s 10-0 run to finish the first quarter.
The Bears never trailed from there en route to a 63-47 win over Cuero.
“We got complacent,” coach Chad Hartley said after Cuero dropped to 1-1 in district. “We didn’t block out.” A dunk from La Vernia showed they were ready to fight for this win, while Hartley didn’t see the same from his side.
“We just weren’t ready to fight,” he said. “They came in with heavy gloves, and we took it. We didn’t meet the fight.”
An inability to pre-read the defense spelled many droughts for Cuero’s halfcourt offense.
“They’re trying to read the defense once they have the ball,” Hartley noted.
“Now, the defense has adjusted, and we can’t swing it.”
It’s also been challenging to have a committee approach at point guard. Seniors Cade Pakebusch and Joseph Arce can handle the ball but provide more outside for Cuero’s offense.
