It may have been one of the more unfortunate ways to start a baseball game, as Michael Barta’s first pitch to La Vernia found its way to deep center field and resulted in an inside-the-park home run. Barta and the Gobblers rebounded, though, and went on to win 4-2 for their third district win in as many games. Barta fired his second complete game win of district in the process.

“It was a big win,” Cuero coach Phil Schwarz said. “We feel like they’re one of the better teams in the district.”

On top of the that, Schwarz emphasizes the importance of protecting your home turf, especially in district play.

“You never wanna give one up at home,” he said. “We were lucky enough to steal one on the road this past Friday [March 22] against Navarro, but it wouldn’t mean as much if we gave this one back at home. I think that’s really important in district that you defend you home field.”
