CHS freshman qualifies for state cross country

Brooke Wendel only started running regularly a little over a year ago, when she was an eighth grade student. Now, as a freshman at Cuero High School (CHS), Wendel led the varsity girls cross country team to their first regional birth in four years. On top of that, Wendel qualified for the state meet.
She set the bar high as a freshman, aiming for state before the season started.
“I wanted to place near the top at each of the qualifying meets,” Wendel said.
Since starting her running career last year, Wendel runs everyday, only taking a few weeks off at the end of the cross country and track season.
“It feels like something that’s in me,” Wendel noted.
For the first time in CHS history, both the boys and girls cross country teams qualified for the regional meet, an accomplishment that was exciting for Wendel.
“Cross country is a sport that’s not very recognized,” she stated.
