Twenty years after taking his first head softball coaching job, Cuero’s Wade Wilson is now a national champion.

Wilson took over the Texas Lutheran University (TLU) softball program in 2012, turning the Bulldogs quickly into one of the top teams in the nation on a regular basis at the NCAA Division III level. Seven seasons later, on May 27, 2019, Wilson’s Bulldogs broke through for the school’s first national title in softball.

“We’ve had some really good teams,” Wilson said, whose teams have won six straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships and qualified for five consecutive NCAA Division III regional tournaments.

The DIII format placed TLU with fellow top-10 programs in the regional round the past several seasons.

Last year, East Texas Baptist and the University of Texas at Tyler were in TLU’s home regional.
