Down to the wire: Gobblers defeat Beeville

With only one home game through the course of the non-district schedule, Cuero made it count for a lively crowd. In coach Chad Hartley’s home-opener as the Gobbler basketball head coach, Cuero came from behind late, led by senior Joseph Arce, to capture the win over Beeville last Monday night, 59-56. A back-and-forth first half finished with Cuero leading by one over the Trojans.
Beeville went on a 12-0 run late in third quarter to take a 10-point lead. The Gobblers chipped away in the final frame with contributions coming from everyone. Arce came up with a huge steal before Cade Pakebusch found him in the right corner for the go-ahead three in the final minute.
“My team needed something, and I saw that I had some space,” Arce said of his big shot. “Coach told me if I had it to shoot it, so I did what coach told me to do. I shot it, and I made it.”
Trailing by seven-plus for most of the fourth quarter didn’t phase Cuero, as Arce and his teammates knew they could get back in the game. “We always gotta have faith in each other,” he said.
“We gotta pull each other together. Once we do that, there’s not a lot of teams that can reckon with us. We knew what we had to do, and we got it done.”
