Earn it: Nordheim picks up sixth district win
By Robert Proctor
Over the last few weeks, Nordheim coach Randy Castillo has placed an emphasis on earning it. He understands that nothing will be given to his team, no matter how talented they are. With goals of a district championship and a deep playoff run in mind, the Lady Pirates earned another district win over Runge last Tuesday night in straight sets (25-11, 25-8, 25-16).
Communication, teamwork, and playing as one unit stood out to coach Castillo from his entire team during their 1A district win.
“We were one team just having the same mindset of wanting to win, just wanting to show their dominance, wanting to show that they’re good,” he said. “That’s what I saw, a team that collectively wants to win, wants to perform.”
One thing coach Castillo can be sure of each time his team takes the court is their willingness to play as hard as they can, no matter the opponent.
“I’ve been trying to stress that,” he said. “Play as if it’s the best team on the other side of the net. Get after it; earn every point. I’ve been really stressing earn it. Nothing’s given to you in life. You always got to earn everything that you want. Don’t go out there and just take it for granted. That’s gonna come back to haunt us if we don’t have that right mindset.”
Having won six of their first seven district matches, with the only loss coming to a 2A opponent (Yorktown), their goals this season are still in play.
