Cuero’s 2017 football season may have finished nearly a month ago, but it’s never too late to think back on the Gobblers’ last state championship in 1987. Henry Flores, a three-year starter at right guard, was a junior on the team that defeated McGregor.
Flores experienced three state title games during his Cuero High School career. As a freshman in 1985, he was called up for the playoffs. By his sophomore season, he became a starter on the offensive line.
“In ‘85, they used us as guinea pigs,” Flores recalled. “We enjoyed it. That’s how we learned.”
He was one of the sub-varsity players who helped varsity prepare each week during the 1985 postseason, but as a sophomore in 1986, he was rooted into the starting lineup.
“We played with our heart,” Flores said. “We went out there and did what we were asked to do. We trained and worked hard at what we wanted to accomplish. We took it day by day, step by step and team by team. We didn’t succeed in ‘86, but in ‘87 we did.”
