Only a sophomore, Cuero High School’s Ryan Garcia will make his second trip to the regional powerlifting meet this week. He’ll be joined by four others from Cuero this year: Charles DeRouen, Javen Mendiola, Caleb Smith and Jonas DeLeon. Thomas Meador also qualified as an alternate.
Simply having the athletes choosing to participate in a non-UIL (University Interscholastic League) event like powerlifting says a lot to coach Clint Coles.
“This is a little bit different than the rest of the sports,” he said.
“When you get this many guys to come and compete and this many guys out to regionals, I think it says a lot about our program, but most importantly, it says a lot about the kids. They’re willing to put in the time that’s required to do what it takes to qualify for a meet like regionals.”
The number also speaks for itself. With five lifters reaching regionals, it shows their commitment. “It’s a really good number,” Coles said.
“Part of it is some of these guys have been doing this for awhile, and they’re starting to get to the point that they’re old enough to be able to push the right amount of weight to get there.”
Their dedication also speaks volumes.
