Giving back to the community

Cantu holds basketball camp for youth in Nordheim

Yorktown News-View

Noe Cantu, former Yorktown Wildcat, and San Antonio Cole Cougars state champion head coach held a basketball camp at the Nordheim Pirate gym June 29 through July 1.  During the pandemic, the youth basketball league that is normally held in the winter for both Nordheim and Yorktown students was canceled.  Kids jumped at a chance to get back on the court, and Coach Cantu fostered a great learning environment that helped the students work on the fundamentals of the sport. Students from seven neighboring towns attended and enrollment was high, forcing him to cut registration to the first one hundred participants.

Coach Cantu thought it would be a unique experience for students to have the opportunity to be exposed to college athletes, therefore, he included several in his camp staff. Camp was offered to all incoming  Grade 1-12 boys and girls.  Coach Cantu felt he was, “ filling a need. Many smaller schools don’t have the opportunities that larger schools have and get overlooked sometimes.”  Larger schools and athletes at bigger schools have many opportunities to perfect their skills and attend leagues or camps. Cantu liked the idea of, “giving back to his old community.”
