Gobbler baseball closes out 2019 season

Winning game one of their area series against the Sinton Pirates put Cuero in the driver’s seat, but a failure to produce hits while lacking pitching depth led to back-to-back losses and the end of their season. Even though Cuero didn’t advance as far as last season, they still won their third straight district championship, and this senior class helped lay the foundation for what’s to come.

Having their ace pitcher, Michael Barta, on the mound for game two put Cuero in a prime position against Sinton. Errors and baserunning mistakes combined with a lack of offense made for a tough day.

Cuero led 2-1 in game two before Sinton scored six of the final seven runs and would go on to win game three, 12-0.

“Game three, their pitching was a lot deeper than ours, and that caught up with us,” Cuero coach Phil Schwarz said.

“They came out and had the momentum. They scored four early and jumped on us and made it really hard to come back.”
