For the second straight season, the Cuero Gobblers and El Campo Ricebirds will meet on the gridiron. Last year, El Campo held an early lead before the Gobblers scored 27 of the final 34 points and came away with the win, 34-20.
Trey Moore, now a defensive lineman at Tarleton State, sealed the win with an interception return for a touchdown in the final minutes. Dating back to 1958, Cuero and El Campo have played five times with Cuero earning their first win last season.
Along with Moore, Cuero’s other four touchdowns were scored by seniors who have since graduated. Keiran Grant and Chance Albrecht combined for three rushing touchdowns, while Michael Barta threw a touchdown pass to Trent Haynes. Meanwhile, Charles Shorter returns to carry the load in the Ricebird backfield, after scoring twice in last season’s game against Cuero as a sophomore.
Shorter finished 2018 with 1,054 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns.
