The Cuero Record

This season has warranted many positives for the future of the Gobbler baseball program. With a playoff roster that will see 12 out of 15 returners next season, the Gobblers will have a lot of experience out on the diamond next fall.

Traveling to Bobcat Ballpark, in San Marcos, this past Friday the Gobblers had a first-round bi-district playoff matchup with the #11 ranked Canyon Lake Hawks. The Hawks were the #2 seed out of District 28-4A with a record of 24-6. In a one-game winner take all series the Gobblers were looking to grab their biggest win of the year.

Cuero would strike first to start the game, but the Hawks would quickly make their presence known putting up two runs in the bottom of the first. The Hawks' lead would never wander, but the Gobblers kept it tight through the first four innings. Sophomore Brandt Patek ripped a clutch two-out deep triple to the biggest part of the ballpark scoring Jerry Rossett. That hit inched the Gobblers closer, 3-2.

Things would start to plunge in the fifth inning when the Hawks rallied for five runs. They lead 8-2 heading into the Gobblers' last at-bats. With Canyon Lake trying to close things down Jerry Rossett poked a single to reach base in his last Gobbler at-bat. Jacob Baker followed with back-to-back singles before Patek hit a sacrifice fly to bring Rossett home. Arthur Barrera kept the momentum going adding another single before the final out was recorded. The Gobblers' season would come to a close after an 8-3 defeat.
